Periodic Field Test of Cathodic Protection System. BUE, along with representatives of Corrpro Companies,
Inc., performed a testing survey of the cathodic protection system of the 308 steel H-piles supporting the EPRI
Building. A test was conducted on each pile, recording electrical potentials at various elevations including:
along the mudline, the middle elevation of the water column, and near the water surface. The cathodic protection
system testing was performed three separate times over a four-year period.
The steel H-piles which were identified as unprotected were restored to a cathodically protected state. This
was accomplished by bonding the unprotected piles to adjacent piles through use of jumper wires exothermically
welded to each pile. Piles which were found to be marginally protected have been identified for closer evaluation
during future surveys.
The cathodic protection system cannot adequately protect steel above mean high water. Therefore, in addition to the cathodic protection testing, BUE performed a detailed Level III inspection of the 308 structural steel H-piles above mean high water. The inspection included cleaning of the most deteriorated H-pile flanges to bare metal and measuring the steel thickness by use of a micrometer or ultrasonic thickness gauging device. BUE performed a more detailed inspection of 15 of the most heavily deteriorated piles. This follow-up inspection included obtaining thickness measurements at each flange and web.
