New York City Department of Sanitation

New York City Department of Sanitation (NYCDOS)
New York, NY
BUE acted as a subconsultant to Parsons, Brinckerhoff, Quade & Douglas, Inc. providing professional engineering services for the Elimination and/or Control of Marine Borers at NYCDOS Facilities.
This is the largest singular undertaking of its kind contracted out by a public agency to address the increasing problem of destruction to waterfront timber structures caused by marine borers and may possibly become a model for other public agencies to follow.
Control of marine borers and the utilization of the most practical borer protection technologies are the
primary focus of the project. Boswell performed all underwater inspections, including non-destructive testing,
timber core sampling, and supervised all laboratory testing of samples.
The information obtained by BUE during the underwater investigation became the basis for determining the best technologies to apply for remediating the borer problem, including the type of rehabilitation and repair designs to be developed. Construction phase management services, also included in the Scope of Work, will monitor contractor repairs and will include quality assurance diving inspections. The project will be concluded by a post-construction inspection of all marine facilities. All diving inspection work will be conducted by BUE personnel.
During the underwater investigation of the project, BUE engineer divers removed a total of 1710 two-inch diameter core samples from randomly selected timber piles supporting the 13 Department of Sanitation facilities to be inspected. All core holes were subsequently filled with an epoxy grout to prevent additional Teredo intrusion.
