Description:

Underwater Investigation of Weehawken Piers C and D. Inspection, material sampling and testing of the two (2) outer ranks of timber piles and pile caps supporting Piers C and D located in Weehawken, NJ. The study was conducted as part of an on-going substructure assessment regarding biodeterioration caused by both marine borer intrusion and fungal decay. Percent bearing of piles with pile caps was recorded along with eccentric loading conditions. Pile sections were removed from non-bearing piles along with a series of 4 in. sq. x 1 in. timber coupons for laboratory testing and analysis to determine various properties of the wood such as creosote retention, bacterial degradation and the type of marine borer species intruding the timber. Compression testing was also performed on the removed pile sections to determine nominal loading capacities for both piers. All field work was carried out using a 3-man dive team consisting of engineer divers. The report assessed the structural stability of the facility and provided recommendations for repair.
